With an increase in elevation above sea level and because of the natural derate of
gas burners resulting from elevation changes comes a multitude of safety and
performance issues for gas appliances.  In 2001 Gas Consultants had several
requests to perform high altitude testing on gas appliances and with utility companies
no longer providing support to manufacturers for high altitude testing in many
mountain states, Gas Consultants decided to open their first high altitude gas testing
facility near Denver, Colorado.

Today, Gas Consultants has 3 gas appliance testing facilities, with a total of 5,000
square feet of testing space at three elevations in Colorado (approximately 5,400,
7,700 and 10,000 feet above sea level).

Our goal at high altitude testing is to help manufacturers determine the functionality of
their product prior to producing and selling in high altitude areas. We can help
manufacturers determine:
  • Resolution of ignition issues
  • Burner performance issues
  • Combustion characteristics at high altitude
  • Pressure switch performance (settings)
  • Vent configurations
  • The proper input (reductions or increase) to maximize safety and performance
  • Temperature issues due to reduced air density
  • Effects on component temperatures due to cooling fan degradation
All the while working to maintain compatibility with the sea level product design.
